What Should I Expect at My First Medspa Visit?

Aurthor: Sarika Diaz, Founder of True Skin Aesthetics

Walking into a medspa for the first time can feel intimidating. Maybe you’re worried someone will judge your skin. Maybe you’ve been researching treatments but still don’t know which one makes sense for you. Or maybe you’re wondering, “Am I going to feel pressured to buy something?”

You don’t need perfect skin, an elaborate skincare routine, or a list of sophisticated questions to belong here.

At True Skin Aesthetics in Houston, your first visit is an opportunity for us to get to know you, understand your concerns, and help you make informed decisions. You bring your skin as it is today. Our job is to help you understand where to go from here.

Here’s what that first visit actually looks like.

A Warm Welcome and a Little Time to Settle In

When you arrive, our receptionist, warmly welcomes you and typically hands you an iPad to complete your new-patient paperwork if it wasn’t completed online ahead of time.

Your questionnaire helps us understand your skin concerns, treatment history, and relevant medical information before we make recommendations. Please answer honestly. We’re gathering information to care for you appropriately, and there’s no judgment attached.

Once your paperwork is complete, Caitlyn guides you into our consultation room for your VISIA skin analysis images. Along the way, there’s usually some conversation and an offer of coffee or water.

Those small details matter to me. I want you to have a moment to settle in and feel comfortable in our space.

Your Consultation Starts With a Conversation

Shortly afterward, your service provider will join you. We’ll introduce ourselves, welcome you, and sit down together.

Before recommending a treatment, we want to understand what brought you in.

We’ll discuss your cosmetic concerns, previous treatments, current skincare routine, and what you’re hoping to achieve. We also want to know how skincare fits into your lifestyle.

Can you accommodate downtime? Do you have a busy work schedule or family responsibilities? What feels manageable financially? How much time are you realistically willing to spend on your routine?

A plan can sound wonderful on paper and still be a poor fit for someone’s life. Our responsibility is to ask enough questions to build recommendations that make sense for you.

You’ll also learn about your provider’s background and experience. I share my experience as an esthetician, laser professional, instructor, and brand trainer because you deserve to understand who is caring for your skin.

You Don’t Have to Know Which Questions to Ask

A patient recently came to see me about BBL treatment after receiving laser services elsewhere. She seemed nervous and somewhat reserved. When I asked whether she had questions, she said she didn’t really have any.

I told her, “If you don’t know what questions to ask, that’s totally fine. I’ll just take it from the top.”

We walked through what happens before treatment, how we prepare the skin, what to expect during the appointment, what happens afterward, and when I would want to see her again.

Later in our conversation, I learned she was a physician. Even with her medical background, she appreciated having the process explained clearly, without being expected to know what to ask.

By the time she left, she was visibly more comfortable and told me how much she appreciated the detail.

That experience reflects something I’ve seen throughout my career: education helps people feel more at ease. You shouldn’t have to arrive knowing the terminology to receive a thorough explanation.

We’ll Review What You Already Use

One of the most helpful things you can bring is your current skincare routine.

Bring the actual products if you can, or take clear photos of them. Knowing the specific formulas tells us much more than hearing, “I use a cleanser and a serum from some brand I got at the store.”

I love doing a skincare audit because sometimes a patient already owns good products but needs help using them appropriately. Other times, there are so many steps that the routine has become confusing or difficult to maintain.

My goal is to make your routine intentional and manageable. Sometimes that means explaining how to use what you have. Sometimes it means recommending changes or consolidating steps.

Please don’t feel embarrassed about what’s in your bathroom cabinet. Understanding where you’re starting helps us guide you.

Your Treatment Plan May Be Different From What You Expected

It’s completely fine to book a consultation because you’re curious about a particular treatment. But that treatment may or may not be the best starting point.

I approach consultations a little like detective work. I ask questions, look at your skin, review your history, and connect the information before making a recommendation.

For example, someone may come in concerned about acne scarring while still experiencing frequent active breakouts. In that situation, I would explain why addressing the breakouts belongs early in the plan. If new breakouts continue, we may keep creating new concerns while trying to improve existing scars.

That doesn’t mean I’m dismissing the scarring. It means I’m thinking about the order of care and how to help you make meaningful progress.

A treatment should have a clear purpose in your plan. Its popularity on social media isn’t enough reason for me to recommend it.

You Can Ask Questions—and Take Your Time

Everybody has to start somewhere. Some of my favorite patients are the people who arrive feeling overwhelmed because they don’t know where to begin. Helping them find that starting point is a meaningful part of my work.

Our role is to explain our recommendations, the reasoning behind them, and the costs involved. Your role is to decide what you feel comfortable moving forward with.

You can ask lots of questions. You can tell us something feels outside your budget. You can say you need time to think.

We discuss Cherry payment plans and, when appropriate, whether a membership fits the proposed treatment plan. These are options to consider within your circumstances.

I never want someone to proceed before they feel ready. I’m interested in building a trusting relationship where you feel comfortable returning, sharing concerns, and asking for guidance over time.

Will You Have a Treatment at Your First Visit?

That depends on the appointment you book, the treatment being considered, and whether your skin needs preparation.

A VISIA consultation typically lasts about one hour. Our First Impressions appointment combines a one-hour VISIA consultation with a 30-minute Express DiamondGlow treatment, so allow approximately 90 minutes.

Personally, I love the First Impressions option. As an esthetician, being able to work with your skin adds another layer to my assessment. I can feel its texture, observe it more closely, and continue our conversation during the service.

For some nervous first-time visitors, settling onto the treatment table also helps them relax.

Our treatment rooms are dimly lit, comfortable, and cozy, with soft music. For our one hour or longer facial services, we offer a robe and time to get comfortable beneath the treatment-table sheets. Throughout your service, we check in about your comfort.

If a procedure requires skin preparation, we’ll explain those steps and plan treatment accordingly. Your first appointment can still be valuable even when the procedure you originally had in mind happens later.

What Does the First Visit Cost?

Our VISIA consultation starts at $50. Our First Impressions consultation, which includes the Express DiamondGlow treatment, is $250.

With either option, $50 can be applied toward another product or treatment purchase made that day. If you choose not to make an additional purchase, that amount remains part of the appointment fee for our professional time.

We also provide pricing and quotes for your recommended plan so you can consider what works for you.

How to Prepare—and What You’ll Take Home

For the most helpful first visit:

  • Arrive on time and with makeup-free skin. This helps us capture accurate VISIA images. Otherwise, makeup will need to be removed.

  • Bring your skincare products or photos of them.

  • Share relevant health information and medications on your questionnaire. These details help us assess treatment suitability and healing considerations.

  • Bring questions if you have them. You’re equally welcome if you don’t know what to ask yet.

You’ll leave with a consultation folder containing relevant treatment recommendations, skincare instructions, educational materials, pricing, and a suggested timeline. If preparation products are needed, we’ll explain what to use before your procedure.

You don’t have to memorize everything we discuss.

Most of all, I want you to leave understanding your skin better and feeling comfortable with your next step—even if that step is taking some time to decide.

At True Skin Aesthetics, our goal is to help you feel beautiful in your True Skin. That begins with making sure you feel welcome in our care.
