Choosing the right medical spa starts with learning who will be caring for your skin. Look for qualified providers, experienced in treating your skin tone and concerns, thoughtful consultations, and a clear plan for what happens before, during and after treatment.
In my 17 years as an aesthetician, the first two things I encourage people to look at are a provider’s qualifications and customer reviews. Both can help you narrow your search. The consultation then gives you a chance to understand how that provider thinks, communicates, and approaches your care.
At True Skin Aesthetics in Houston, our work centers on corrective skincare, advanced laser treatments, and caring for diverse skin tones. We want clients to understand their options and feel confident about the treatment plan we create together. If my sister, friend or mother was looking to find a new medical spa; these are the things I would encourage them to consider when choosing the right clinic for themselves.
Start With the Person Performing Your Treatment
Take time to learn about the individual who will actually perform your service. Read their biography, ask about their training, and find out how much experience they have with the treatment you are considering.
Credentials should be relevant to the service. A professional license, a training certificate, and experience using a particular device each tell you something different. I would want a provider who can explain what their qualifications cover and how they continue developing their skills.
My background as a Laser Professional, Laser Safety Officer, Educator and National Speaker shapes the questions I encourage clients to ask:
• What type of license, authorization, and training do you have to perform this treatment?
• How regularly do you perform it?
• What experience do you have treating my concern on skin types that look like mine?
• Do you have Before & After Photos?
• How do you decide whether someone is a suitable candidate?
• What would make you recommend a different approach?
A provider should be comfortable having this conversation. You are making a decision about your skin, and understanding who is treating you is a reasonable place to start.
Look for a Provider Who Invests in Continuing Education
Continuing education is something I take seriously. As an aesthetics and laser instructor and a Sciton Luminary, I believe providers should continue building their knowledge throughout their careers. I value education that strengthens treatment decisions, improves technique, and supports a thoughtful approach to safety.
When choosing a medical spa, ask about advanced training related to the treatments you are considering. Find out what additional education your provider has pursued and how it influences their approach to your skin. I would want to hear more than the name of a course. I would want to understand how that knowledge helps them evaluate candidates, personalize care, and recognize when a different approach is needed.
Experience and ongoing education should work together. Time in the treatment room is valuable, and so is the willingness to ask questions, refine techniques, and keep learning. That commitment is something I encourage clients to look for in the person caring for their skin.
Read Customer Reviews for the Experience Behind the Rating
Customer reviews can help you understand what it feels like to be cared for by a practice. I encourage you to read the details and look for patterns across recent and older reviews.
Pay attention to comments about:
• The specific provider and treatment the client received.
• Whether recommendations and expectations were explained clearly.
• How comfortable clients felt asking questions.
• Communication and support after treatment.
• Experiences with concerns similar to your own.
A review describing a thoughtful consultation or helpful follow-up gives you something useful to consider. A high star rating alone cannot tell you whether a provider has the right experience for your particular treatment.
Use reviews alongside your credential research and your own conversation with the provider. Your comfort with their explanations matters, too.
Look for Experience With Your Skin Tone and Concerns
Experience with your complexion and the concern you want to address should be part of your decision, especially when considering corrective treatments for skin of color.
For example, laser hair removal, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends asking about experience treating people with your skin coloring, expected results, individual risks, and before-and-after photographs. www.aad.org
If you are searching for lasers safe for skin of color, ask the provider to explain how they select an appropriate treatment for you. I would want to hear how they account for your treatment history, previous skin sensitivities, healing or pigment changes, and the condition of your skin today.
As a Sciton Luminary and laser educator, I place a strong emphasis on understanding the reasoning behind a treatment. A provider should be able to explain why they recommend a particular approach, what its limitations are, and how they will reassess your skin along the way.
Before-and-after photographs can help you understand their work. Look for consistent lighting and angles, and ask about the timeline, number of sessions, and any additional care involved. Those details provide context for the result you are seeing.
Pay Attention to the Quality of the Consultation
A thorough consultation gives your provider a chance to understand both your skin and your life. I want to know what you have already tried, what concerns you most, and what you are hoping to achieve.
At True Skin Aesthetics, we begin with an in-person evaluation and VISIA skin analysis. The images help us document a starting point and discuss your concerns alongside your history and examination. Imaging supports the assessment; it does not replace medical evaluation when one is needed.
We also discuss your health history, medications, previous procedures, current products, and how your skin has responded to care in the past. Your lifestyle, budget, available downtime, and upcoming events help us build a plan that is practical for you.
For example, knowing about an upcoming vacation or an important event helps us discuss treatment timing and recovery. Understanding your routine helps us identify what you can realistically maintain at home.
Leave With an Understanding of Your Plan
Before agreeing to treatment, you should understand:
• How the proposed treatment works and why the treatment is being recommended for your skin.
• The alternatives and their advantages or limitations.
• Possible risks and the expected recovery.
• The estimated number of sessions and how progress will be assessed.
• Preparation, home care, and aftercare instructions.
• The anticipated cost and what is included.
• Who to contact with questions or concerns afterward.
Sometimes, my recommendation may be to support the skin first or adjust a skincare routine before considering an in-office treatment. I want clients to understand the purpose of that preparation and how it helps us achieve safe and beautiful results.
Choose a Provider Who Is Honest About Limitations
Knowing when to delay, decline, or change a treatment is part of being qualified to recommend it. I value a provider who is willing to explain uncertainty and make an appropriate referral when another professional’s expertise is needed.
Be cautious about guaranteed outcomes, promises of risk-free procedures, or pressure to purchase before a meaningful assessment. You should have time to ask questions and understand the recommendation.
Clear follow-up matters as well. Before treatment, ask how the practice handles concerns, who will respond, and what to do if your recovery differs from what you were told to expect. That conversation is part of understanding the quality of care you are choosing.
Consider the Full Treatment Plan and Ongoing Care
Budget is an important part of this decision, and I believe a provider should help you prioritize. When comparing recommendations, look at the estimated cost of the full plan, including proposed treatments, home care, follow-up, and maintenance.
Ask which steps are essential, which are optional, and whether the plan can be phased around your budget and schedule. Price alone cannot tell you whether a treatment is appropriate or whether a provider is the right fit.
At True Skin Aesthetics, my focus is on helping clients understand how each recommendation fits into their overall care. We discuss preparation, treatment, recovery, and what maintaining progress may involve. We also reassess as your skin changes.
I want you to feel comfortable sharing what is working, what feels difficult, and when your priorities change. That communication helps us keep your plan realistic and relevant to you.
Find a Medical Spa in Houston Where You Feel Informed and Supported
The right medical spa should give you confidence in both the provider’s qualifications and the way they approach your care. You should feel listened to, understand the recommendations, and know where to turn with questions afterward.
